giorgi morandi

this man discovered, for himself, the perfect relationship between his eye and his paint.
he told the world what he saw was beautifull,
he showed them his pictures
and they believed him...
he didn't need to paint big theme's, big subjects, with big stories
small pots and bottles, was enough to keep him satisfied for a lifetime.
morandi proved that small things can sometimes be infinitly more fascinating than anything else.
alexander cozens

now here is something a friend of mine showed me. i used to think art-history was driven by 'inventions.' complete original thought. kind of what you would expect of a marcel duschamps.
this friend dropped a name i hadn't heard before. in a discussion we had about american-expressionism. i claimed, at the time, that it was 'original.'
re-invention of painting and such. the things they teach you (and me) in artcollege.
enjoy these alexander cozens drawings, sketchings, paintings.
it does not prove this claim made by alot of artstudents i've come acros. 'you can't be original, so don't even try.'
it actually supports the idea of originality. but, as we both concluded in that discussion, almost 4 years ago. originality is something you obtain by working hard, and knowing what you are doing. originality is pushing the boundaries of your craft

the odalisque

it's a styleform that seemed to have grown in popularity since the invention of it. orientalism originally was a way of depicting these beautifull mysterious arab women. maybe the most beautifull example was painted by ingres.
some time later. about a century, the odalisque seemed to have become a reason to paint beautifull women. an excuse almost. the art-changing artist gladly used the theme of the 'odalisque' and started playing with it. the content didn't change much. mysterious beautifull women. the form changed alot however.
i brought henri matisse and a sketch of picasso along for this.
i have got alot more where these come from. i'll post them later.
these paintings always remind me of staring at girlfriends, when they aren't aware of it. an odalisque is just a little bit like staring through a keyhole

Vilhelm Hammershøi

Vilhelm Hammershøi is a danish painter. he seems to have fallen out of the collective awareness of europe. thank god the danes remember him, or i wouldnt know about him.
he's mostly active in the 1900s, he lived from 1864 till 1916.
he lived in the right time to be called an impressionist, but his country of origin differs. france is a colourfull bon-vivant country, opposed to denmark.
and this is one of the main reasons i like Hammershøi, he's an impressionist in a darker nation. he's just as sensitive to light and surrounding as any impressionist out there, but it differs in outcome.
somewhere in there, there's a whiff of another great northern (dutch) painter sensitive to his surroundings. johann vermeer...
pierre bonnard, the real one

i thought i might post an original bonnard. you might have an urge to start comparing. i'm not nearly as good as he is. i'm still in complete awe.
if you compare, notice i study painting by using his work. please, compare with that in mind. i'm not trying to be his copy. i like to think i show respect to his originality by not copying him. but rather to derive a new 'original' work.
the appearance of automatovpetrov.blogspot.com has changed, today.
this blog exist for a while now, but it is becoming a serious pass-time now.
i might change more things in the following days.
things should be simpeler now. easier.
some may have noticed. i switch between languages freely.
sometimes, being belgian, i cant really find the right trail of though in the english language. so i write dutch.
it is important to me to write with the right intensity, but i barely even succeed doing that in dutch. i'm not very eloquent in both languages. im not a writer.
i try to get by.

lucian freud

dat kantelpunt fascineert me.
schilderkunst was wereldomvattend,

i want to introduce you to three amazingly beautifull women.
paintings can make you fall in love. or lust.
and with these three i hope you might finally understand the story of pygmalion.
i would like too see these people, these situations, happen in real life. same colours, same shapes, same feelings.
please, enjoy
i want you to understand what paint is capable of.

i went to see luc degryse yesterday.
he want's to exhibit some of my work in februari. showing it in the departement where i graduated.
seems like a nice idea, right?
i do think so.
two pictures i find very interesting.
one is the poster fril 'the birds' by hitchcock.
the other one is an antique postcard i found while browsering ebay.
part of being interested in art is never stopping at it's own borders.
not everything needs to come out of a museum. most things that are never really
exhibited belong in musea more than current artists.
i went to 'night of the museum'(nacht van het museum) last week, and the exhibition in the SMAK gallery, the ghent museum of modern art almost made me cry. it was uphauling, honestly.
enjoy the pictures,
i'll explain sometime soon why i find them interesting.

updating the blog
'oh, listen to him babble,he's full of intentions again' i hear automatov moan.
don't worry, dearest friend, ill expand this personal cult around you. it is about time you , dear petrov, gain some personality.
i am going to make you a real character.
'great' he sighs sarcastically
here's the idea of automatov petrov. the deeper, underlying thought. for those who aren't afraid to be deep, off course. automatov petrov is a metaphore. an explanation for what's intense about painters. they are all searching for a way to depict theyre dailey lives. what they see of what they feel or whatever. this urge to depict, is like another persona.
a painter lives a life like any other, but in the back of his head, through his eyes, another man watches. someone observing everything.

it's been a while since i've posted here
don't hold it over my head,
it has also been a while since i've painted something i was happy with.
i'm thinking about expanding this blog, actually. you'll notice it when the big change happens.
but automatov might start chatting about my new film project, 'the invisible man'
we'll see how it goes
in the mean time, here's another bonnard-interpretation. i actually enjoy painting myself in his world. i've always been so jealous of his paintings, this kind of feels like a friendly invasion. it kinda summarizes were i would want too be
