Vilhelm Hammershøi is a danish painter. he seems to have fallen out of the collective awareness of europe. thank god the danes remember him, or i wouldnt know about him.
he's mostly active in the 1900s, he lived from 1864 till 1916.
he lived in the right time to be called an impressionist, but his country of origin differs. france is a colourfull bon-vivant country, opposed to denmark.
and this is one of the main reasons i like Hammershøi, he's an impressionist in a darker nation. he's just as sensitive to light and surrounding as any impressionist out there, but it differs in outcome.
somewhere in there, there's a whiff of another great northern (dutch) painter sensitive to his surroundings. johann vermeer...
